Chelsea Garden Cemetery, established in 1841, is one of eight Chelsea locations named to the National Register of Historic Places, receiving that designation in 2001. At that time, "garden" cemeteries were popular in urban locales as public spaces, to sit or to stroll, in addition to being a local burying ground. At over three acres and with winding paths, the Chelsea Garden Cemetery was designed for regular use by the public; the site is currently closed awaiting maintenance and rehabilitation.
