At Second Street, the park sits opposite Independence Hall (157 Winnisimmet St.), which is now condominiums. It was here on September 19, 1848, that Abraham Lincoln, then a U.S. Congressman, delivered an address in support of the Whig Party's candidate for President, General Zachary Taylor. Of Lincoln's speech in Chelsea, the newspaper the Boston Atlas reported, "The Whigs of Chelsea last night held one of those meetings which do good to the inner man. The Hon. Abraham Lincoln made a speech, which for the aptness of illustration, the solidity of argument, and genuine eloquence, is hard to beat.”
